Types of Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships come in many forms, tailored to different industries and career paths. Here are all the categories available from the public Government Apprenticeship API [1] and a summary of what it includes:

  • Agriculture, Environmental and Animal Care

    • Focuses on farming, veterinary work, horticulture and similar. Apprenticeships include: farmworker, environmental technician, veterinary assistant etc.

  • Business and Administration

    • Mostly office-based roles, including administration, human resources and project management Apprentices learn skills essential for business operations.

  • Care Services

    • Involves supporting the vulnerable, such as the elderly, children, or those with disabilities. These apprenticeships prepare you for roles in social care, nursing, residential support, and other patient care jobs.

  • Catering and Hospitality

    • Offers opportunities to become chefs, restaurant managers, event planners and focusses on customer service and management roles.

  • Construction and the Built Environment

    • Can lead to jobs such as bricklaying, surveying, and site management as you will learn about building and maintaining infrastructure.

  • Creative and Design

    • Involves roles in the arts, media, and design, such as graphic design, fashion, or filmmaking.

  • Digital

    • Covers technology-focused roles such as software development, cybersecurity, digital marketing, networking and more

  • Education and Early Years

    • Prepares apprentices for roles like teaching assistant or childcare worker and emphasises on educational theory.

  • Engineering and Manufacturing

    • Apprenticeships in this field often have a strong focus on innovation and precision. They can lead to roles like mechanical engineer, technician, or production manager.

  • Hair and Beauty

    • Focuses on personal care services, including hair and makeup artists and beauty therapy.

  • Health and Science

    • Covers roles in healthcare, research, and laboratory work.

  • Legal, Finance and Accounting

    • This sector provides training for roles such as paralegal, accountant, financial analyst, and lawyer - focusing on compliance, analysis, and ethical practices.

  • Protective Services

    • Maintenance of public safety through roles in the police, fire service, or security.

  • Sales, Marketing and Procurement

    • Helps build skills in negotiation and customer service to land a job in promotion and selling products or services

  • Transport and Logistics

    • Prepares you for roles in logistics coordination or supply chain management with skills like efficiency, safety, and organization.


Levels of Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are available at different levels which correlates to the level of qualification achieved during it:

  1. Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2): Equivalent to GCSEs, these apprenticeships provide a foundation in a particular field and can be the starting point if you don't have any prior qualifications.

  2. Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3): Equivalent to A-levels, these programs are more in-depth and are suitable for those who have already completed their GCSES or other Level 2 qualifications.

  3. Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4 and 5): These are equivalent to a foundation degree or higher national diploma and provide advanced training and specialised skills.

  4. Degree Apprenticeships (Level 6 and 7): Equivalent to a bachelor's or master's degree, these apprenticeships combine studying for a degree from a university with work experience.
